Swinging Radio England History

Swinging Radio England's first home at sea

Radio England first appeared off the coast of Britain in May 1966. This was the first ship to carry 2 radio stations Britain Radio and Radio England. Radio England survived for six months. Already there were off the English coast 12 stations. The Number of stations had already reached maximum, that coupled with the British government introducing legislation to close the offshore stations. Radio England became Radio 227 broadcasting in Dutch. Britain Radio remained on the air until 1967 when it lost its antenna. However it was thought that Radio england would return as the ship remained at sea until August 19th 1967 and was the last ship to leave, apart from Radio Caroline which continued to broadcast in defiance of the British government. Radio England was originally planned to be a fully automatic station there were originally to be no disc jockeys on the ship ( this was changed before the launch date). Whether due to this station being on the internet has influanced Offshore Radio Greats to produce several cds of the original station we dont know but we link to it here. There are also recordings of many of the other offshore stations.

present

With ANR already broadcasting on http://www.pirateradionetwork.com tests were carried out to find out if 2 stations could broadcast from one softwear program, these tests were successfull so a name had to be found for a new station looking at the history of Radio England it seemed right that that had to be the name and the oldies format fitted nicely together with the original jingles.

The new internet station became a hit so much so that it now is carried on shoutcast and jetcast as well as pirate radio network. between 7000 and 15000 listeners tune in each week.

Swinging Radio England's future

As to the future that is partly in the hands of the gods as it is for all small internet broadcasters with July 15th looming the Stations in the united states and the possible closure of live 365. Due to the record industry association of america demanding 150% of all revenue from all U S stations will radio england or any small broadcaster survive. it is noted that the terestrial stations do not have to pay this even if they stream their signal so we believe that all this is just so the over the air broadcasters get the internet to themselves and the same old stuff is the only thing heard. If the same is repeated worldwide as it could be all you will hear is what is on your radio already.

will Radio England become the defiant one you will have to wait and see.
